WHICH MOLECULAR MEDIA IS RIGHT FOR ME? TAKE THE QUIZ TO FIND OUT

Addressing Odor Control in Grow Facilities

Grow facilities are popping up everywhere across North America, which has brought a few issues to light, namely, how to control the grow house odors that these facilities produce. As licensed producers learn the ins and outs of how to effectively control these odors, they’re realizing that carbon might not fully meet the challenge of grow house odor control.

To understand how to solve for the odor problem, Purafil traveled across North America to collect gas samples from multiple grow house facilities. This involved collecting samples from rooms at each stage—cultivation, harvesting, processing—to be analyzed by third party labs. The results showed the varying gases commonly found in these facilities as well as concentration levels. Once we had this data, we compared it to odor thresholds to see what would be detectable to the human nose.

Think terpenes are the only gases that cause odors in grow facilities? Think again. The results from our extensive gas sampling identified whole groups of gases with low odor thresholds (they’re easy to smell) that weren’t terpenes. Like terpenes, however, the identified gases can impact the performance of carbon in odor control applications. This includes gases from cleaning supplies and people as well as the plants themselves. So, how do licensed producers holistically address this issue? With Purafil’s SPHINX™ grow house media.

SPHINX was custom engineered (based on gas sampling) to address grow house odors. So, while carbon is unable to completely remove many of the identified gases, SPHINX uses chemisorption to fully eliminate these gases. This allows for broader range gas removal (removes 99.9% of identified odorous gases), which, in turn, can help reduce odor complaints and ensure compliance with odor regulations. Another benefit of SPHINX media is that it doesn’t allow for microbial growth, unlike carbon. Microbes can form a biofilm on the surface of carbon, which clogs the pores and can minimize the carbon’s ability to adsorb odors. It simply can’t capture or remove as many gases as SPHINX.

12,000 U.S. Facilities Store Hazardous Chemicals, Raising Concerns of Catastrophic Leaks

It’s no secret that harsh chemicals are used in the manufacturing of everyday products, and they’re even used to treat the water we drink. However, when these chemicals are gathered on an industrial scale, they can pose a potential threat to onsite employees and the local community. Unfortunately, this situation is more common than you […]
